So you need a label, with colour, that lasts outdoors a long time, or survives in harsh marine environments? In that case, you're after a two-ply engraved tag. The material is commonly known by a few different big brand names, but in essence it's just two-ply acrylic; where you laser engrave the top off to reveal the bottom colour, to make a label.
Basically, it's two different colours of acrylic bonded together. The top layer is quite thin (in the order of 0.1mm), and it can be laser engraved off in parts, to reveal the colour underneath. Because it's made from acrylic, it will last in full sunlight or hash chemical and marine environments for an extended period of time. This makes it perfect for labelling hard to label items!
Envirapest, a local pest control company, has a large number of eco-friendly rat traps deployed. They're numbered so they can keep a track of them and report on how well they perform. In the past, they used traditional paper labels, which simply didn't last very long - moisture, dust, and little critters made short work of them! So they contacted us about what would be a longer term solution for them, and we recommended these two ply labels.
They were economical, and have proven reliable. Now they can always determine which trap was which!
As these need to be manufactured in specific colours, not all colour combinations are available. Our standard supplier has a range of 15 combinations; other suppliers have more or less. So we might not be able to meet your specific colour requirements. Having said that though, the basics are present, and all designed to be high contrast and easily readable.
Yes - you might have seen this material out and about as it's common for trophies. Brushed gold, brushed silver, and brushed bronze front finishes, typically with black backings, are commonly available. It's still acrylic; it's just been designed to look like brushed metal. These can be a cost effective and eye catching solution for trophies or awards boards.
This material and method is commonly used by electrical companies to label switchboards in a durable manner.
